Fisheries: active acoustic deterrent devices, so-called ‘pingers’, for gillnet fishing

The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management regulations amending the Swedish National Boardof Fisheries regulations (FIFS 2004:36) on fishing in Skagerrak, Kattegat and the Baltic Sea

There will be a general requirement to use pingers when fishing with bottom-set gillnets or entangling nets inthe areas along the south coast of sub-area 24 included in ICES rectangles 39G3 and 39G4, for which therecurrently is a corresponding pinger requirement for fishing vessels over 12 metres in length. This means thatfishing vessels shorter than12 metres shall also be required to use pingers when fishing with gillnets in thearea.

Part A of Annex XIII to Regulation (EU) 2019/1241 requires vessels with an overall length of 12 metres or moreto use active acoustic deterrent devices, so-called ‘pingers’, in ICES sub-area 24. Under the Swedishprovision, fishing vessels under 12 metres in certain parts of ICES sub-area 24 are also required to usepingers when fishing with gillnets.
