Adult queen bees (Apis mellifera)

The draft measure lays down sanitary requirements, including those pertaining to the country or area of origin, hives of origin, pre-shipment, packaging and transport, the necessary health certification and procedures upon arrival in the country.

The requirements include the following:

1.    Certain notifiable diseases must not be present, and disease-free status must have been declared by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and approved by the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG).

2.    Hives must be located at sites that have had no cases or clinical evidence of the diseases detailed in the draft legislation within a 5km radius. In addition, hives must have been subject to biosecurity control measures and treatment under specific conditions against acarapisosis, nosemosis and varroosis.

3.    Hives must also have been subject to health inspections in the last two years, the most recent one carried out no more than 90 days prior to shipment, and be authorized for export by SAG.

4.    There must be a pre-shipment quarantine of at least 30 days, during which the bees must show no signs of communicable diseases or parasites, and the results of the diagnostic tests listed in the draft measure, which must be carried out in official laboratories or laboratories authorized by the competent authority, must be negative.

5.    Specifications for biosafety and welfare conditions during transport prior to quarantine and until shipment, the cages used, attendant bees and the type of food permitted.

6.    Each shipment must have an official health certificate containing specific information, in Spanish and the official language of the country of origin.

7.    The selection of quarantine conditions and options upon arrival in Chile, and the destruction of everything accompanying the queen bee.
